The University of Indianapolis is a private 4-year university with about 5,400 students on the main campus just south of downtown Indianapolis. 84% of freshmen and 51% of full-time undergrads live on campus, in seven residence halls and 58 apartment units. UIndy is a great example of environmental stewardship, with several buildings retrofitted and/or constructed with aerated concrete to dramatically insulate and reduce energy consumption.

Opened and commissioned in 1987, Ross Correctional Institution is a men’s state prison in Chillicothe, Ohio operated by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, with 8 cell houses and an average daily population of 1,900 offenders. Large-quantity domestic hot water and space heat needs produced yearly expenditures for natural gas of approximately $500,000. Additionally, the ODRC wanted to expand its vocational training opportunities for offenders to include a green/sustainable focus, and provide a better chance for reducing recitivism through meaningful employment upon release from custody.

In October 2021, the Indianapolis Airport Authority (IAA) commissioned a solar thermal system at the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) in Indianapolis, IN. The IAA partnered with Solar UV Solutions, an Indianapolis-based solar thermal distributor, to install 70 solar thermal collectors on the roof of its new Consolidated Snow Removal and Equipment Storage facility. The solar thermal collectors heat a 10,000-gallon water storage tank during the day, which then feeds into the facility’s hydronic loop to be used for space heating for large snow removal equipment. The solar thermal installation contributes to the IAA’s long-term goal to be Net Zero by 2050 and aligns with its commitment to sustainability and resilience.
